1. What is the best improved Kienyeji breed of chicken for my farm?
Both Rainbow Rooster and Kuroiler F1 are very good dual purpose breeds however Rainbow Rooster is a better layer than Kuroiler laying upto 220 eggs in one year. Kuroiler puts on meat faster and is favourable for hot, humid climates like Kisumu and Mombasa.
2. What is the vaccination schedule for Kukuchic chics?
A. Kukuchic broilers (pre-vaccinated) -Booster vaccine at day 14 Newcastle/IB through drinking water B. Rainbow Rooster and Kuroiler F1 Day 1-Mareks Disease (Done at our hatchery) Day 6-Newcastle/IB through drinking water Day 14-Gumboro through drinking water Day 21-Gumboro Intermediate plus through drinking water Day 28-Newcastle/IB through drinking water Week 6 -Fowl pox through wing web stab Week 7-Coryza Intramuscular Injection Week 8- Fowl Typhoid Intramuscular Injection Week 16 Deworming Vaccinate Newcastle/IB every 2 months.
3. What should I feed my chickens at different growth stages?
Improved Kienyeji Breeds 0-5 weeks, Chick mash/crumbs 6- 20 weeks, Growers mash or Kienyeji mash Over 20 weeks, Layers mash Broilers Day 1- 21, Broiler starter crumbs Day 22-35, Broiler finisher pellets.
4. How do I prevent common poultry diseases?
1. Follow proper vaccination schedules 2. Keep your poultry house clean, dry and disinfected 3· Avoid overcrowding 4. Isolate sick birds immediately and consult a vet .
5. How do I ensure my chics get the best start possible?
a) Ensure your chicks have access to clean and high quality feeds. b) Ensure your chicken coop is well ventilated c) The chics should have access to clean water d) Adequate lighting to ensure the chics locate feed and water especially for the first 72 hours e) Right temperature during brooding (first 2 weeks). 1st week 32-30 oC 2nd week 30-28 oC.
